Atelophobia

Recently,  I came across this term through a friend of mine who happens to be going through this problem for a long time now.  I'd never heard this word so went on to do my research. As it turns out,  "Atelophobia is the fear of imperfections.  A person suffering from Atelophobia thinks that every action he does is error prone." Sounds strange ain't it.  But as a matter of fact,  this condition does exist and is pretty common.

All of us often feel that whatever we do is not up to the mark or that we are no good.  There is a desire in us that our surrounding people should  have a liking towards us. We often wonder  what the other people would think about us etc etc. For any other individual, these are the thoughts that come and go but can you imagine an unending chain of such thoughts.

How would life be when whatever you do - good or bad, comes with a negative anxiousness that it is not right? What would you do if every time you meet someone, all you can think about is whether they'd like you or not despite your personal emotions about them? To me, even the thought of such constant mental pressure sounds terrifying and yet there are many among us who go through this trouble day and night and have been living with it for God knows how long..

The cause of Atelophobia is most often the situations and environment during childhood.  Children who have a difficult childhood or face some kind of not so pleasant atmosphere at home in their growing years often tend to lack an inner self confidence. Apart from that, a routine comparison of a child's performance with that of others can also lead to an inferiority complex which can have a permanent impact on their minds and lives.

Those who have Atelophobia usually have a tough time believing in themselves or that what they are doing is really good. They are in a constant need of approval and sometimes even that doesn't work. These friends of ours have a tough time expressing their deep feelings which further makes things restricted for them. A majority of them are not even able to discuss their issues or sometime don't understand them themselves for that matter because even if they say it, the reply is almost always going to be something like, "ye sirf tumhara bahaana hai, aisa kuchh nahi hota. (This is just your excuse, there's nothing like this)"

Relax guys! It's OK. I know things are not as smooth as they should be but what's a journey without some bumps. If you are afraid of not being good enough trust me, it is not so. You are the best of you and not a single person on Earth can be as good as you are. And making mistakes is just an essential part of the experience since that's what we can laugh at in the future. Try to talk things out with a confidant and let yourself be free of the burdens. If anyone out there is aware of a friend or an acquaintance who goes through such turmoil please be appreciative of whatever they do. DON'T show pity. Just be genuine and supportive. Last but most importantly, a sincere request to all current as well as future parents out there, "don't manufacture, Nurture". Let your children build a self confidence and not just become a competitive machine.

Apne gham se khelta hai, dard kitne jhelta hai.
Sochta tu aur kuchh hai, aur kuchh tu bolta hai.
Apne dil ko tu manale, beech ka parda utha le .
Aazma le

Protection or Prison

Under the guise of safety  We keep our doors closed Merely imagining the world beyond We accept to be forever entombed What we fail to recognize Is that we are our own prison Limiting our own powers We have given up our own freedom What started as protection Has now become a jail That which we are so afraid to break out of That which has become our excuse to fail   The reality is not what we believe Rather, we can actually take charge Change the direction our destiny takes And break free from the tower so large -Tamrina

Ten Years

There is an interesting thing we all like to do in our life and that is commemorate dates. Whether it is birthdays, anniversaries, he or she day we met someone for the first time but also, the day we lost someone dear to us. On the one end, the remembrance gives us joy and a chance to celebrate and on the other, they are an opportunity to think about that special person, often through teas and wonder, if things could have been different. As humans, it is our nature to assign meaning to things; whether it is the changing of seasons, that breaking of a glass or even, our own suffering. Why do we do that? It is to find some sense of order in this chaos of a world. Similarly, attaching that special meaning to some days gives us a break from the mundane. It allows us to take a breather from everyday routines and shuffle things up a little bit. I once read somewhere that grief is the love we feel for someone once they are gone and maybe this is why we remember them extra on particular da...

We Win Some, We Lose Some and We Snooze Some

A while back, a close friend had told me that my life would always be interesting because I have a passion and a dream to fulfil it, which translates to me always having something to fight for. This statement has stuck with me, especially in my low times because it is very true. When things get tough, I think about the destination I have set for myself and it gives me the strength to overcome the obstacles in my path. Something that I have come to realize very recently though is irrespective of the journey a person chooses to embark in life, there are many battles that each of us has to fight. And despite our best efforts, we win some, we lose some and we snooze some. Now the first two is pretty self-explanatory and the reality of life and circumstances but the third option is what I wish to share with you today. For some people, life is a constant uphill battle; it could be due to a social disadvantage, financial challenges, belonging to a marginalized group, intrapersonal struggles,...
