Growing
up, I'd always heard, "People who talk to themselves are crazy."
At that time, it somehow made sense but as I grew up, I realised we couldn't have been more wrong.
Don't get me wrong, I'm totally familiar with the concepts of mental disorders causing delusions and hallucinations but that is not something that happens as frequently as you'd think. What I'm talking about is, really talking to yourself. Like arguing and giving justifications and the whole package.
The fact is, no one, and I mean No One, knows you as well as you do. Be it your parents, your siblings or your best friends, they only know those parts of you which you have chosen to share with them. Whether consciously or unconsciously, we choose a very specific kind of information that we share with each important person in our life. There is always something that we do not allow ourselves to bring out in the open. We are always too aware of how the other person would perceive us and how their impression of us would be altered if we told them a certain thought we had. I’m not saying that this is incorrect, rather it is the best we can do to live a good life.
The problem arises when, in our efforts to be socially accepted and liked by everyone around us, we lose the sense of who we are on a deeper level. It happens so gradually that sometimes we don’t even realise the changes we have brought in ourselves just so we can ‘fit-in’. Now these changes can be a good thing in many situations but then, you have to know the reasons behind your actions and accept that you are changing for the better. And the only way for that to happen is by you ‘talking to yourself’.
I call it Expert Advice because You are an expert on the subject that is You. You know who you are, you know each and every single one of your thoughts and actions. You are aware of each and every one of your feelings and emotions. You know how a certain person makes you feel and you also know the exact reason why it is so. There are more solutions inside that mind of yours than the number of problems in this world. All you need is the will to find them.
There are various ways through which you can connect with yourself an each of them is as good as the next one. Nothing works for everybody and everything is perfect for nobody. You must pick what suits you best and give it your full dedication because, to be honest, this is a slow but very rewarding process. Spend time on your hobbies; sing, dance, write, draw, paint, bake whatever, try meditating or workout, spend time with yourself. Find out what you think and why you think that way, analyse your behaviour and ensure that you actually wish to be the person that you are. It may seem unnecessary and frustrating in the beginning but once you get the hang of it, you’ll appreciate all that you have been missing out on.
