institutionalised, Are We?

A dear friend introduced me to this term “Institutionalised” and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head ever since.

Institutionalised, as he put it, is when we become so used to certain unnecessary and unrealistic elements of our environment we are in that we stop questioning anything and accept everything just as it is. We somehow give up on our own free thought and decide to follow the herd because it looks easy. We become so accustomed to being told what to do and what not to do that we forget to actually see the rationale behind our own actions. I’m sure this doesn’t sound like something you think you’ve been doing but think again.

Over the past couple of months, I have come across such things as I always wished for but didn’t know were possible. I have met people and had conversations that have given me such perspective as I didn’t even realise I was lacking. And that is exactly what being ‘institutionalised’ is. It is our inability to realise to just what extent we have isolated ourselves in our bubbles of the same old same old routines. We feel it right to go by what has been going on for so long as the right way because we have never known any other route and we refuse to look for one.

Bursting your bubble doesn’t have to mean anything big, it simply means making an effort to get out of your comfort zone, both physically and psychologically. Break the shell of stereotypes and prejudice and look around you. Talk to people and try to really listen to what they are saying and understand why they are saying so without the clouds of judgement. Take a moment to see if what you have been doing really holds the kind of value you intend it to or are you just doing so out of convenience.

I’m not trying to instigate anything here or prove that experience has no value. Far from it. What I’m saying is, there is a whole world of interactions and experiences to be had beyond what we have been doing till now. Past matters, experience matters, rules matter, but they are not above a fresh perspective and original ideas. You feel something in your system is broken, take a step to fix it. That step can mean a conversation with the person responsible or an action on your own behalf. It doesn't matter if you fail or succeed, what matters is that you think about how the issue affects you and how a change may influence not just you, but others as well. Stop doing things just for the sake of doing it but do them because you feel it is the right thing to do.

Protection or Prison

Under the guise of safety  We keep our doors closed Merely imagining the world beyond We accept to be forever entombed What we fail to recognize Is that we are our own prison Limiting our own powers We have given up our own freedom What started as protection Has now become a jail That which we are so afraid to break out of That which has become our excuse to fail   The reality is not what we believe Rather, we can actually take charge Change the direction our destiny takes And break free from the tower so large -Tamrina

The Evolving Lyrics of Life

I often say music is the sound of the soul and basically equivalent to oxygen for me. I know it sounds like a cliché but hear me out. All my life, starting from as early as I can remember, music has been my constant companion: in my joys and sorrows, smiles and tears, greetings and losses, it has been an integral part of almost all of my core memories. It inspires me, holds my hand when I am alone and even makes me make sense of my complicated emotions when I am unable to. Something similar happened a couple days ago and I want to talk about it.   Chaahe jo tumhe poore dil se, milta hai wo mushkil se. Aisa jo koi kahin hai, bas wo hi sabse haseen hai. Uss haath ko tum thaam lo, wo meharban kal ho na ho I am sure a majority of you have heard these lines many times and we all have our own interpretations of them, I did too. My understanding of these lines emphasized how we should embrace the love that walks into our lives and hold on to it as it is a rare thing to find but also, we m...

My 2024 Wrapped

I have contemplated writing this post, wondering if I am really in a mood to travel back down the memory lane and explore the year I had. But here I am, reflecting on what all went down in the last year, just as a way for myself to document my journey through the chaos. I started 2024 in a not so good mood, with dealing  emotions that were just too heavy to be explained in words or even understood, from feeling lost and alone to at the same time feeling guilty about letting down the people who cared for me, it was a complicated beginning. Then came a happy moment when I attended my first ever concert, something I desperately wanted to do. On the work front, I continued my MPhil journey, learning things I assumed I wouldn’t be able to do and finding ways to accomplish my goals in ways that were interesting to say the least. Feelings of being overwhelmed and not doing enough for my goals were a near constant, often to the point of being counterproductive. I learn...
