Udta Punjab

With the trailers of the bollywood movie Udta Punjab out and the release date coming close,  there are a lot of speculations as to how well the movie would be able to justify the issue at hand. But this is nothing in comparison to what is being done by the great Censor Board of India.

The drug situation in the state of Punjab is no more a secret to anybody. As a resident of Punjab I feel terrible to accept the fact that a large part of the youth of this once very prosperous state is completely ruined.  And let's face it people,  we all know who is to be held responsible for all this hell.  And you can't disagree with me on this that somewhere even we share this responsibility because it is we who gave these morons the power to destroy us.

Now that it's just 2 weeks left before the release of Udta Punjab,  the Censor Board suddenly feels that the movie has a lot of abusive and inappropriate dialogues.  In the recently released title track of the film, certain main lines were changed at the last minute just because they were clearly suggestive to drugs.  Oh For God's Sake!!!!!  You don't mind songs where women are being called sluts or things to be used but drugs? NO!! And why are you doing all this? Because you are obviously being pressurised by those in power to do so as the truth if shown would shatter their already deformed image.

If you think this is it,  then you are wrong guys.  From what I have just read,  there are proposals asking the makers to change the Name of the movie as apparently Udta Punjab is somehow defaming the state and probably more than that,  the so called political authorities.

As far as I remember,  we live in a nation that's run on the principles of democracy.  We the people have the right to express ourselves and watch whatever we wish to,  especially if it sheds some light on the reality even if it hurts.  The entertainment industry can and should not let itself be influenced by the dirty politics of this country.  I really wish whatever is the outcome,  it should be sensible and factual.  I hope the audiences too watch the movie for what it is and not take it as a threat or harm to their caste or community and use their wisdom to understand the message.  It is only if we strive to end this addiction from our society that we can walk towards a better future.

Protection or Prison

Under the guise of safety  We keep our doors closed Merely imagining the world beyond We accept to be forever entombed What we fail to recognize Is that we are our own prison Limiting our own powers We have given up our own freedom What started as protection Has now become a jail That which we are so afraid to break out of That which has become our excuse to fail   The reality is not what we believe Rather, we can actually take charge Change the direction our destiny takes And break free from the tower so large -Tamrina

Ten Years

There is an interesting thing we all like to do in our life and that is commemorate dates. Whether it is birthdays, anniversaries, he or she day we met someone for the first time but also, the day we lost someone dear to us. On the one end, the remembrance gives us joy and a chance to celebrate and on the other, they are an opportunity to think about that special person, often through teas and wonder, if things could have been different. As humans, it is our nature to assign meaning to things; whether it is the changing of seasons, that breaking of a glass or even, our own suffering. Why do we do that? It is to find some sense of order in this chaos of a world. Similarly, attaching that special meaning to some days gives us a break from the mundane. It allows us to take a breather from everyday routines and shuffle things up a little bit. I once read somewhere that grief is the love we feel for someone once they are gone and maybe this is why we remember them extra on particular da...

We Win Some, We Lose Some and We Snooze Some

A while back, a close friend had told me that my life would always be interesting because I have a passion and a dream to fulfil it, which translates to me always having something to fight for. This statement has stuck with me, especially in my low times because it is very true. When things get tough, I think about the destination I have set for myself and it gives me the strength to overcome the obstacles in my path. Something that I have come to realize very recently though is irrespective of the journey a person chooses to embark in life, there are many battles that each of us has to fight. And despite our best efforts, we win some, we lose some and we snooze some. Now the first two is pretty self-explanatory and the reality of life and circumstances but the third option is what I wish to share with you today. For some people, life is a constant uphill battle; it could be due to a social disadvantage, financial challenges, belonging to a marginalized group, intrapersonal struggles,...
